Second Wii Boxing Attempt - Sat 23/02/08

As Becky became more familiar with the game she became more confident. Here initial awareness of being filmed diminished a little as she became engrossed in the game rather than being very aware of the movements that she was making.

I particularly like this video of her second attempt at the game as it shows her getting more 'into' game play. Replicating what she perceives to be the way that boxers move she begins to bounce on her toes before the game has actually started. This shows an increase in confidence (after her previous defeat) as well as the ability of the Wii console to make a player feel like they are part of the game. Bouncing on her toes did not help Becky in succeeding in the game from a technical point of view; this movement was not picked up by the computer. Was she replicating the movement of the character on the screen, her Mii, instead of moving in a way that she understands a real boxer does? this needs to be investigate further through the digitisation of the Wii output recording as it can be synced and compared to this video (or preferably the better quality version).

There is also a demonstration of physical calibration of the controllers towards the end of the clip. To gauge what effect her actions are having to her avatar being used for play Becky raises her hands above her head. this gives her confirmation that she is in control of the avatar, and allows her to regain her bearings within the virtual play space. I think this may be something that happens less the more often the game is played; this was one of the first times that the Wii had been played at all.

Beckys' punching actions seem considered and accurate rather than frequent movements in an attempt to land as many hits as possible (which seems to be the case in the video of myself to be displayed in the next post).

Returning to this clip I have noticed that Beckys' punching action appears to be more labored when she exclaims that she is 'dying'. Again, this seems to show the relationship between her physical self and the virtual Mii avatar. When her Mii is taking a pasting her own actions begin to become labored as if she can't get any punches in - instead of frantically throwing punches in an attempt to gain the upper hand.
